The future of Huawei and its smartphones continues to shape itself in order to consolidate its total independence from the software: with the prospect of HarmonyOS coming to the brand’s phones, the next version of EMUI will be the last to be developed. Rumors point to EMUI 11.1 in March, probably next to the Huawei P50.
Although the US veto has wreaked havoc on Huawei, with a notable reduction in the sale of smartphones due to limited access to basic electronic components, that does not mean that the brand has stopped fighting since is directing a large part of its business to software. The basic pillar of this turn is HarmonyOS (Hongmeng OS in China), a software that targets both smartphones and connected objects. And there will be a victim: EMUI.
EMUI 11.1 would already include the HarmonyOS kernel
Huawei presented the HarmonyOS beta in China and at the moment its test is limited to that country. Under the promise of being distributed to the latest mobiles, the controversy regarding the similar between Huawei and Android operating systems– HarmonyOS beta is built on Android AOSP. Huawei confirmed it by ensuring that the stable version will be developed entirely on Huawei software; with a first step that could be taken with EMUI 11.1.
The brand uses to evolve EMUI with each ‘premium’ mobile that it launches on the market. So, EMUI 11.1 would be the software with which the Huawei P50 would start as standard, mobiles that should see the light during March 2021. Apart from the novelties in design and functionalities, a leak on Weibo ensures that EMUI 11.1 will be the last version of the layer since Huawei will focus all its efforts on HarmonyOS.
The aforementioned EMUI 11.1 would have marked the launch in March. The funny thing is that it would serve as a transition since, according to the leaks, EMUI 11.1 would include the HarmonyOS kernel, a step that would facilitate the subsequent update to Huawei’s own firmware. It remains to be seen if said kernel will be based on Linux, as is the case with Android.
For now we will have to wait to see the official launch of EMUI 11.1 and which phones will it reach apart from the Huawei P50, phones with which it would start as standard. We will also see if finally HarmonyOS differs from Android and is a 100% Huawei development.
