When Google introduced Wear OS 3 Last May under a new unified platform a very important question remained unanswered: Will the watches with Wear OS 2.0 upgrade to Wear OS 3? Well, we finally have an answer.
Google has already decided what to do with the current Wear OS watches on the market, confirming that Wear OS 3 is coming to the previous generation, also informing how and when the expected update will arrive.
Wear OS 3 for the previous generation
Google reports that they will bring Wear OS 3 to the previous generation of smartwatches to bring many of the new experiences to current models, but clarifies that in some limited cases, the user experience could be affected, without giving more details.
Due to the scope of the changes introduced in Wear OS 3 during the installation clock data will be factory reset, so after installation all data will have been deleted and you will have to set the clock again. For that reason the update will be optional. The user will be able to decide whether to continue with Wear OS 2.0 or upgrade to Wear OS 3.
Google hopes its partners can roll out the Wear OS 3 update from the second half of 2022, with what until within a year the existing clocks will not update to the new version. The release of Wear OS 3 for new models is planned for later this year.
Wear OS devices that will be eligible to upgrade to Wear OS include the TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, TicWatch Pro 3 LTE and TicWatch E3 models along with the new generation of Fossil Group (owned by Google) devices launching later this year. . Manufacturers are expected to confirm more models in the coming weeks.
For watches that will not be upgrading to Wear OS 3, Google reports that they will continue to update the other Wear OS watches with more improvements such as the recent updates to Gboard and Google Play Store.
