A few weeks ago, Samsung held a new Unpacked where, in addition to presenting its new folding, the Galaxy Z Flip3 and Fold3, it unveiled the next generation of your smartwatch. The Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic thus became the first smartwatches to integrate Wear OS 3, Google’s new operating system for wearables.

Now, the South Korean company has launched a new application on Google Play that gives us the possibility of wear those watches like a walkie-talkie. This free app, called Walkie Talkie and discovered by XDA, allows two or more users to have instant conversations without resorting to mobile data.

Version 1.0 of the Samsung Walkie Talkie app It is now available on Google Play for free download and is 23 MB in size. Similar to the Walkie Talkie function of the Apple Watch, this new Samsung app allows two users to create channels and maintain a two-way voice communication through their watches, without the need for the phone.

In other words, it turns the new smartwatches into push-to-talk walkie talkies for send short voice messages in real time. Of course, only the owners of a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 (standard or Classic) can use it to talk to each other, it is not compatible with smartwatches from other brands or with previous models of the company. And it requires a Samsung account to use it.

Although it can work independently once configured, Samsung recommends running the Walkie Talkie application for the first time while the watch is connected to the phone. Simply pair your watch with the Galaxy Watch 4 from a close contact and hold the microphone button to transmit the voice.

Samsung does not specify the operating range of the application, so we do not know how far it can be used. As for the optional permissions requested by the app, they are the following: Microphone (to transmit the voice), Contacts (to identify friends who can use the Walkie-Talkie), Call (to limit the Walkie-Talkie function when receiving a call ) and Location (to create a channel searching for close friends via Bluetooth)
